Remove passive voice in doc to silence warnings

The write-good feature as invoked by tox coala WriteGoodLintBear
complains about usage of passive voice e.g., 'is applied'.
These changes silence all but two warnings about use of the word
'validate' which is a well-known Maven goal.
This makes no functional change to any templates.
